Althoff junior Edywn Brown picked the perfect time for the first touchdown reception of his career.

With Althoff down to its last play and facing fourth-and-10 Friday, Brown hauled in a 23-yard TD pass from Jordan Augustine with 15.9 seconds remaining to give the Crusaders a 24-22 victory over Collinsville.

“Coach called the vertical and I just went up and got it,” said Brown, who worked his way free near the right side of the end zone. “I couldn’t do (anything) but go up and get it.”

Collinsville (0-1) seemed ready to pull an upset over the state’s fourth-ranked Class 4A team, leading Althoff (1-0) 22-18.

Augustine had a lot of time and waited for a receiver to get open, finding Brown for the game-winner. It was the third TD pass of the night for Augustine, who battled cramps all night and still completed 20-of-37 passes for 208 yards and three TDs with two interceptions.

“At any given time these guys can go up and get the football,” Althoff coach Ken Turner said. “We feel like we’ve actually got about six or seven of them. I told (Augustine) if one of those guys were open, just take a shot. They were closing in on Keenen (Young), which left Edwyn one-on-one.”

Along with Augustine, Althoff got big nights from C.J. Coldon (seven catches, 81 yards) and Tarkus Ferguson (five catches, 63 yards). Augustine threw two TD passes in a 1 minute, 42 second span of the first quarter to Coldon and Keenen Young. Malik Easley added an 11-yard TD run in the third quarter.

Collinsville quarterback Jordan Reichert ran wild, racking up 163 yards and two TDs on 27 carries.

Turner was happy to see Augustine take advantage of the defense at the end.

“It’s in his hands almost like a joystick,” Turner said. “He’s got five guys out there that can catch the football and can run routes. If he stays poised and reads it right, those guys are going to catch the ball.”

Rick Reinhart’s coaching debut at Collinsville was a memorable one. He saw positives, but also negatives on a missed field goal in fourth quarter, a bad punt snap and a long punt return.

“It came down to special teams,” Reinhart said. “Bad snap on the punt and a missed field goal. Either one of those (go well) and we win the ballgame. This game’s on me, it’s totally my fault. I’m in charge of special teams and offense.”
