Edwardsville High junior defensive end A.J. Epenesa was the only player from Illinois earning first-team All-American honors when the MaxPreps 2015 Junior All-American Football Team was announced this week.
The 6-foot-5, 260-pound junior racked up six sacks and 11 tackles for loss among his 39 tackles for the Tigers (9-1). Epenesa, who has offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Florida State, Oklahoma and most of the other top programs in the nation, also had three fumble recoveries.
He is a two-time first-team All-Area selection on the Belleville News-Democrat’s Large-School All-Area Football Team. Epenesa is also a basketball and track standout for the Tigers who is currently averaging 15.9 points and 12-7 rebounds in basketball.
