Center fielder Jon Jay was placed on the St. Louis Cardinals’ disabled list Thursday morning before the finale of a three-game series in Cleveland.
Jay, who is batting .248 with no home runs and six RBIs in 30 games, is suffering from left wrist tendinitis. The move is retroactive to Sunday, the last game in which Jay played.
To replace Jay, the Cardinals recalled first baseman/outfielder Xavier Scruggs from Class AAA Memphis. Scruggs, 27, was batting .229 with seven doubles, six home runs and 18 RBIs in 30 games for the Redbirds. He will wear No. 59.
The Cardinals also announced that they have transferred left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia’s 30-day injury rehabilitation assignment from Memphis to Class AA Springfield. Garcia is scheduled to start Friday, his second rehab outing.
