Reynolds’ HR lifts Cardinals, Lyons
Tyler Lyons, pitching for the injured Lance Lynn, won for the first time since May 28, 2013, as the St. Louis Cardinals nipped Kansas City 3-2 at Busch Stadium. Lyons (1-0) allowed two runs on three hits, two of them home runs, walked one and struck out six. Lyons' last win also was against the Royals.
At the plate
Matt Carpenter and Jason Heyward had RBI singles in the third against Jeremy Guthrie (4-4), and Mark Reynolds hit his fourth homer of the season in the fifth, also against Guthrie, to break a 2-2 tie and give St. Louis the lead for good.
Odds and ends
Trevor Rosenthal recorded the final out in the eighth and worked a scoreless ninth for his 21st save. ... Reynolds, Heyward, Yadier Molina and Kolten Wong each had two hits. ... Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez homered for Kansas City.
