Here are more fan reactions to the firing of Mike Shildt as St. Louis Cardinals manager
The BND received more than 150 reader responses to last week’s request for reaction to the firing of Mike Shildt as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.
We posted a sampling of the initial responses over the weekend.
Following is a sampling of additional responses. Most of these are verbatim quotes from readers, so please excuse incomplete sentences and other typos.
Here you go:
- I didn’t like MANY, MANY decisions he made. He was always giving his players chances to prove themselves in situations that cost us many games. You don’t bat Carpenter 3rd, 4th, or 5th. You don’t keep putting in Reyes in key situations when he started failing again and again. You don’t start giving everyone days off, killing the win streak, and especially the winning momentum before the playoffs.
- Bad move. I think he was fired because he is not a “yes” man to Mozeilak. Firing him by telephone was a cowardly thing to do. Mozeilak is the one who should have been fired.
- I think we all wanted his head all season long. Then came a fluke hot streak and now he’s a saint.
- Callousness By Front Office
- Ok with it
- Surprised. But long term I think it’s best.
- Figured they would
- I have no problem with this. But they should have started at the top and fired Mozailak and his entire staff. It’s time for a new set of eyes in analyzing your players.
- Not surprised! Shildt made many questionable choices & decisions in key game situations that cost the team the game! He’s a nice guy, but not really a careful manager, rolls the dice too much instead of making solid decisions.
- I wonder how much MO actually knows about philosophy. More importantly, how much does he know about personnel management? It doesn’t look good at this point. By the way, I have an earned doctorate in philosophy.
- Glad
- Used to respect MO but not any more. Absolutely gutless way to fire someone. The firing is subject to personal views but the way it was done is absolutely disgusting. Be a man and explain.
- Stinks
- Great move. Should have been done sooner.
- I think it was a horrible, low class move!!! Shildt took a team with several injuries, and a lot young inexperienced players and molded them ,and made them believe in themselves!!! The result was a run for the Championship! He made this team a lot of fun to watch again! 19 games won out of the last 21 speaks for itself!!! Best of Luck Mike, you’ll be missed!!!
- Honestly I am shocked that they did it, but ultimately I am happy. This season I have been very frustrated with the decisions Shildt made as well as his nonchalant attitude about everything. Bringing in Reyes during the bottom of 9th during the WC game was the wrong decision, which I believe lead to the ultimate decision to let him go.
- I think that Mo should go too! He’s not the guy for the Cardinals!
- It was the right decision. Overdue.
- Terrible decision
- BEST DECISION EVER. Only thing better would have been if Mozeliak was fired also.
- Not a smart decision. Mo is the problem. Not shildt. Also a very shady move doing it over the phone.
- Made my day. He wasn’t much of a strategist and had no clue how to handle the pitching staff. Didn’t let Maddux go when he should have, as well as whatever ineffective hitting coaches they had.
- Very very bad.
- Surprise
- I was not a Schildt fan, but this firing and the way it was done—classless.
- That was a load of crap.
- Unjust
- Should have been the hitting coach!
- This applies to most sport teams. No one is happy with a winning year and a Championship every 10-15 years. It’s unrealistic. Most of the time the problem is higher up in organization anyway, but the managers or coaches take the fall.
- B. S.
- Fire all or none
- It’s time for Mo to hit the road.
- Good move but low class method!
- Bad
- Wasn’t a Shildt fan. He lost alot of games with very poor decisions. Cardinals 17 game win start should have been a race for a division title not a 1 game playoff. The only shame is Albert didn’t get fired also
- Shildt”s leadership and the team’s lackluster performance for the first 140 games of the season were terrible. I got sick of his post game interviews and found him to be totally uninspiring. I’m fine with his dismissal.
- No must go
- Classless! MO should go.
- It was necessary. Mike is a good man but he couldn’t manage based on facts, he cared more about hurt feelings than results.
- Bad Move, MO must go.
- A huge mistake
- Strongly support decision
- I think something had to be done. Shildt’s decision-making wouldn’t cut it for most big league clubs and unfortunately MO isn’t going anywhere. The fact that they fired him but still said the season was successful is ludicrous. No MO. No Mr. Dewitt. Just because we ended up winning 90+ games, made the WC game (not the Real playoffs), and you lined your pocket with ticket sales $ does not mean success. I’m thinking about denouncing my fandom of this team after 25 years.
- I think the firing was overdue and the right decision. I think he is a manager for the minor leagues. His record I believe has nothing to do with his management abilities. It took him forever to put Sosa in, he continued to play Reyes and Carpenter. We need a new manager and I am very excited about this turn of events.
- I think they should have started at the top by firing MO and his staff. It is time they get some fresh eyes on the younger talent. This move does not surprise me but they also should start over with a new hitting coach
- Disappointed
- Bush League, especially for class organization like STL
- Very low class way to handle it. No one should be blindsided by a personnel action.
- Very bad decision
- I have no feelings either way cause he did make some bad moves. However the Cardinal reasoning is silly. The hitting coach and president should have went before Shildt.
- Very bad move. One of the few big mistakes the Cardinal Organization has made in many, many years,
- He got a bad deal. Mo should have been fired and the hitting coach.
- Based on Reyes’ total collapse 2nd half, he should not have pitched unless he was the ONLY pitcher left. I called the outcome before he left the bullpen. I would have fired him BY PHONE before he reached the locker room. Totally stupid bullpen decisions all year. 17 game streak was not his doing.
- Mo needs to go- Another organization will end up with a great manager- fire Mo vice president/ gm’s are a dime a dozen- good managers are an investment- Bad move Mo!
- Personally I think it’s Bush league move.
- Very selfish and idiotic
- I think when he put Reyes in against the Dodgers in the one-game playoff sealed his fate.
