St. Louis Cardinals set to hire Oli Marmol as their new manager, sources say
In the press conference following the stunning firing of manager Mike Shildt, St. Louis Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak pledged that the club would work quickly to fill his job.
Ten days later, that promise appears to have been kept.
The Cardinals are set to announce Oliver Marmol as the 51st manager in franchise history at a press conference scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday. Ken Rosenthal and Katie Woo of The Athletic were the first to report the news, which was confirmed by Jeff Passan of ESPN and to the News-Democrat by two sources.
Marmol, 35, will be the youngest manager in the major leagues and the youngest in franchise history. He served the last three seasons as Shildt’s bench coach and five years as a manager in the team’s minor league system.
He will be the first person of color to manage the Cardinals since Mike González did so briefly in 1938 and 1940.
By staying with an internal candidate, St. Louis will seek to maintain continuity with a coaching staff which led them to the postseason following a franchise-record 17-game winning streak in September.
Marmol is highly regarded within the industry and would likely have received consideration for vacant managerial positions around the game if not for his promotion.
