Flower(s) power: White Sox catcher homers in 11th to beat Cardinals
Tyler Flowers’ two-out home run on a 1-2 fastball from Miguel Socolovich in the 11th inning Tuesday lifted the Chicago White Sox to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, whose six-game winning streak was snapped before a capacity crowd of 45,626. St. Louis finished 9-2 at Busch Stadium in June, losing the first and last day of the month.
On the mound
Both starting pitchers were excellent. Lance Lynn, of the Cardinals, allowed one run (earned) on six hits in six innings, walking one and striking out six. Chris Sale, of the White Sox, surrendered one run – Randal Grichuk’s long fourth-inning home run – on six hits in eight innings, with one walk and 12 strikeouts. Sale became just the second pitcher in major-league history to record 10 or more strikeouts in eight consecutive starts. The other was Pedro Martinez.
Up next
John Lackey (6-4, 3.35 ERA) will pitch for the Cardinals against the White Sox’s Jose Quintana (3-7, 3.95 ERA) in the series finale at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
