Cards purchase Piscotty, option Pham; Ty Kelly designated for assignment

As reported Monday, the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday purchased the contract of outfielder and first baseman Stephen Piscotty from Class AAA Memphis.

Outfielder Tommy Pham was optioned to Memphis, while Memphis infielder Ty Kelly was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Piscotty.

Piscotty, 24, was bating .272 with 28 doubles, 11 home runs and 41 RBIs in 87 games at Memphis, with a .475 slugging percentage. He was a supplemental first-round pick in the 2012 draft (36th overall).

Piscotty recently began playing first base, appearing in six games. He has played 73 games in the outfield this year, 61 of them in right field.

Piscotty will wear No. 55. He will be in uniform at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday when the Cardinals open a two-game set in Chicago against the White Sox.

Pham, 27, was batting .182 (8-for-44) with the Cardinals, with four doubles, one home run and three RBIs in 13 games.
