Pirates’ homers, Cole subdue Cardinals

Gerrit Cole pitched seven shutout innings and Aramis Ramirez and Sean Rodriguez clubbed seventh-inning home runs to power Pittsburgh past St. Louis on Sunday night at Busch Stadium. John Lackey absorbed the loss. He allowed the homer to Ramirez that made it 3-0, and reliever Steve Cishek permitted the homer to Rodriguez, a two-run blast, that made it 5-0.

The Cardinals had a scant two hits against Cole: fifth-inning singles by Jon Jay and Matt Carpenter. Cole (16-8) walked three and struck out seven ... Lackey (11-9) lasted 7 1/3 innings, yielding 10 hits, walking three and striking out seven. ... Starling Marte added a two-run homer against Tyler Lyons in the ninth. ... Gregory Polanco had three hits for Pittsburgh, while Ramirez, Marte and Francisco Cervelli had two apiece.
