Wainwright activated, will work out of pen

The St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday activated pitcher Adam Wainwright from the 60-day disabled list and placed right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez on the 60-day disabled list with a strained shoulder.

Wainwright, 34, who suffered a left Achilles’ tendon injury April 25 in Milwaukee, has missed 141 games. He is 2-1 with a 1.44 ERA in four starts, but will work out of the bullpen for the remainder of the season, and perhaps, the postseason.

Wainwright last pitched in relief during the 2006 season when he closed out both the World Series and National League Championship Series. He has made 221 consecutive appearances as a starter since that time.

The two-time 20-game winner and three-time All-Star is 121-67 with a 2.90 ERA in his career.
