Cardinals catcher Molina undergoing surgery on left thumb

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was scheduled to undergo surgery Thursday afternoon on the partially torn ligament in his left thumb.

Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak said Molina will be unable to perform any baseball activities for eight to 12 weeks, but will be ready for spring training in February.

Molina, who aggravated the injury on a swing in Game 3 of the National League Division Series, initially hurt the thumb on a tag at home plate on Sept. 20.

Mozeliak said Molina probably would have underwent a procedure three weeks ago if the Cardinals had not been headed for the postseason.
