St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was scheduled to undergo surgery Thursday afternoon on the partially torn ligament in his left thumb.

Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak said Molina will be unable to perform any baseball activities for eight to 12 weeks, but will be ready for spring training in February.

Molina, who aggravated the injury on a swing in Game 3 of the National League Division Series, initially hurt the thumb on a tag at home plate on Sept. 20.

“He didn’t make it any worse,” Mozeliak said of Molina playing with the injury. “Had we not been a playoff team, we probably would have dealt with it three weeks ago.”

Molina was just 1-for-8 with two strikeouts in the division series, which the Cardinals lost to the Chicago Cubs three games to one.

Molina had a single in the seventh inning of Game 2 in St. Louis. He did not play in Game 4.
