Cardinals re-sign reliever Broxton; Reynolds signs new deal with Colorado
Jonathan Broxton will return to the St. Louis Cardinals' bullpen in 2016.
The Cardinals on Thursday re-signed the free-agent reliever to a two-year contract. Broxton, 31, was acquired last August from the Milwaukee Brewers.
CBSSports.com announced that Broxton’s deal is for $7.5 million and includes full no-trade protection.
Broxton was 3-3 with a 2.66 ERA in 26 games last season, striking out 26 in 23 1/3 innings. He is 39-35 with a 3.23 ERA and 118 saves in his career.
Broxton had 36 saves for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2009.
Also Thursday, the Cardinals lost infielder-outfielder Mark Reynolds to the Colorado Rockies.
Reynolds, 32, signed a one-year deal worth $2.6 million plus incentives. The agreement was first reported by CBS.
He joins former Cardinals Daniel Descalso and Jason Motte in Colorado.
Reynolds hit .230 with 13 homers, 48 RBIs and 121 strikeouts in 382 at-bats for the St. Louis Cardinals this year. The 32-year-old, a nine-year big league veteran, set career highs in 2009 with Arizona when he had 44 homers, 102 RBIs and 223 strikeouts — a big league record.
