Counting down the biggest moments, plays that shaped Kansas City sports history
A Kansas City sports photo album would be filled with snapshots of the unforgettable moments ... when fortunes changed in a flash.
The Star is creating that album this week, ranking the top 25 sports moments and plays of Kansas City and the region.
These events have shaped the Kansas City sports scene, and we’ve had our share with some unfolding just a few months ago.
Completing a list was a nearly impossible task, and moments that should be included didn’t make it. We pared down an original large list to 25, slid some on and off, changed the position of others. And still a case can be made for plenty more.
A few thoughts guided the process. Strong consideration was given to turning points in high stakes events. You might guess big moments in Chiefs, Royals, colleges and Sporting KC postseason play will be listed.
But it’s not all playoff driven or even team sports exclusive. You’ll see.
Recency bias? All three Kansas City pro teams have won championships since 2013, giving us plenty of choices from the current era. But we didn’t forget about the biggest moments of the past.
Remember, these aren’t the best games or the most influential sports figures, although some of the biggest moments were authored by the brightest stars on the grandest of stages. These are singular moments that can provide such memories you remember where you were and who you were with when watching.
The list begins a countdown today with five moments and we’ll list five each day this week. And let the debate begin.
