KC Chiefs place receiver Josh Gordon on NFL reserve/COVID-19 list ahead of Thursday game

A day after catching his first touchdown in a Chiefs uniform, wide receiver Josh Gordon might have to wait for an opportunity for his second score.

The Chiefs on Monday placed Gordon on the reserve/COVID-19 list, a source familiar with the situation told The Star. Gordon’s placement on the list later appeared on the NFL Transactions report.

While the league’s personnel notice doesn’t indicate why a player is placed on the list, the NFL Network reported Gordon tested positive. With a positive test, Gordon’s vaccination status plays an essential role in how long he must stay away from the team’s facility.

In accordance with the league’s COVID-19 protocols, vaccinated players or staff members who test positive and are asymptomatic are allowed to return following two negative tests taken 24 hours apart.

If Gordon is not vaccinated, he would fall under the league’s 2020 COVID-19 protocols, which requires a 10-day isolation period. Either way, Gordon’s availability for Thursday night’s game is very much uncertain.

The Chiefs signed Gordon in late September. He has appeared in nine games with six starts, totaling four catches for 27 yards and a touchdown on nine targets.

In other team-related news, the Chiefs released an injury report for Thursday night’s game. The team didn’t practice Monday, but the Chiefs are required to release the report with estimations of player participation levels as if they were on the practice field.

The Chiefs listed cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (not injury-related) and safety Tyrann Mathieu (not injury-related) as not practicing. Sneed’s matter is personal as he takes care of his family following the death of his brother, while the Chiefs designated Mathieu’s reason as “other.”

Linebacker Nick Bolton (wrist), cornerback Rashad Fenton (knee), defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (elbow) and rookie tackle Lucas Niang (ribs) would have been limited. Defensive lineman Chris Jones (ankle), running back Darrel Williams (quad) and offensive lineman Andrew Wylie (knee) would have practiced fully.

The Chiefs will practice Tuesday before flying on Wednesday to Los Angeles.
