Kansas City Chiefs have started talks with Orlando Brown Jr.’s new agent, Reid says
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid previously said on May 26 that the team was waiting on Orlando Brown Jr. to hire an agent before talks with the franchised-tagged left tackle kicked off.
Brown took care of that step by hiring Michael Portner last week, so let the discussions between Chiefs general manager Brett Veach and Brown’s camp begin.
“He’s talked to the people that are working with Orlando and they’ll keep doing that,” Reid said Thursday. “It’s good that he’s taking that step, for sure.”
The Chiefs have a little less than six weeks to get something done on a long-term deal with Brown before the league-wide deadline for franchise-tagged players on July 15, a date Veach has said gives the team time.
If the Chiefs and Brown don’t agree to a multiyear contract by the deadline, the left tackle would play the 2022 regular season under the franchise tag, which pays $16.6 million, when he signs it.
Brown hasn’t appeared at the voluntary portion of organized team activities and he might not be present for next week’s three-day mandatory minicamp because he’s not under contract.
With Brown absent from OTAs, the Chiefs are getting a good look at veterans Geron Christian and Roderick Johnson as potential swing tackles.
Meanwhile, Brown appeared on the NFL Network earlier in the week and expressed confidence on a new contract by the deadline.
Reid appeared to also express optimism something would get done.
“We love Orlando here,” Reid said. “He’s a good human being and he’s a good professional. He’s grown up around it. I think he’s got good counsel, so we just got to work through it.
“I don’t see anything that’s going to get in the way there.”
