KC Chiefs coach Andy Reid shares injury updates on Justyn Ross, others at training camp
Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid said three injured players would be out for the start of training camp following recent surgeries.
Cornerback Rashad Fenton (shoulder), tackle Lucas Niang (knee) and receiver Justyn Ross (foot) will be present for the team’s upcoming sessions on the Missouri Western State University campus but won’t be out there for drills, Reid said.
Ross, in particular, will be a situation to track. The Clemson wideout received some buzz after picking the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent. Ross missed all of the team’s organized team activities in May and June, though, with Reid saying that Ross started having issues with a foot that had undergone a previous surgery.
“Just wasn’t functioning quite the way ... it was bothering him. So it wasn’t working quite the way he wanted,” Reid said. “So they went in and redid it. We’re hoping this works out well.”
Reid didn’t have a specific timetable for Ross’ return but said his recovery is “gonna take time.” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach revealed in April that Fenton went through an offseason shoulder “cleanup” procedure.
Niang, meanwhile, is still recuperating from a torn patellar tendon he suffered in the last regular-season game of the 2021 season.
Each figures to start training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Players on the PUP list are not allowed to practice until the Chiefs’ medical staff clears them. If a player is not activated from the PUP list before the regular-season opener, he can’t practice with the team for the first four weeks of the regular season.
Fenton, Niang and Ross are the only three players that Reid expects to miss time because of injuries at the start of camp.
“Everybody else is good to go,” Reid said. “Everybody else is back.”
