Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announces new quarterbacks coach: ‘He’s the natural fit’
The Chiefs are staying with an in-house candidate to fill their vacant quarterbacks coach position.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid announced Tuesday that pass game analyst/assistant quarterbacks coach David Girardi was promoted to fill the primary spot left vacant when the team elevated Matt Nagy to offensive coordinator.
“He’s the natural fit in there and that’s what he’ll be doing,” Reid said of Girardi.
Girardi’s transition as Patrick Mahomes’ primary position coach should be seamless.
Girardi originally joined KC’s coaching staff in 2018, serving as an offensive quality control coach until 2020. The Chiefs promoted him to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2021, and he served under Mike Kafka in 2021 and Nagy in 2022. Kafka left during the 2022 offseason to become the offensive coordinator with the New York Giants.
Before joining the NFL coaching ranks, Girardi served as a quarterbacks coach at Lafayette College in 2017. He also served on Northwestern’s coaching staff as a defensive graduate assistant and offensive quality control coach (2014-16).
Girardi played quarterback at Geneva College, where he garnered NCCAA All-American honors twice.
Reid revealed the Chiefs also interviewed Boise State offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Bush Hamdan before promoting Girardi.
“College football is in good hands with him,” Reid said of Hamdan. “So, Boise State, I’m happy for them.”
