NFL has awarded Chiefs these compensatory picks ahead of 2023 NFL Draft in Kansas City
The Chiefs picked up more firepower for the 2023 NFL Draft.
The NFL on Thursday announced the Chiefs have been awarded three compensatory picks: third round (100th overall), sixth round (217th overall) and seventh round (250th overall).
The third-round compensatory pick won’t stay with the Chiefs for long, though. The Chiefs agreed to send that pick to the New York Giants as part of last season’s trade for wide receiver Kadarius Toney.
The league incorporates a complex formula, which was developed by the NFL management council, to determine compensatory picks “based on salary, playing time and postseason honors” from players lost in the previous season.
Among the players the Chiefs lost during 2022 free agency, the NFL management council determined that defensive end Melvin Ingram, center Austin Blythe, wide receiver Byron Pringle, defensive tackle Jarran Reed and cornerback Charvarius Ward qualified for Kansas City to receive a compensatory pick.
The NFL management council noted the Chiefs’ gains of safety Justin Reid, wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
As of now, and before the NFL officially announces the Chiefs’ full draft order at a later time, the Chiefs project to have 10 selections in the draft.
- Round 1, 31st overall

- Round 3, 95th
- Round 4, 122 (from Miami)
- Round 4, 134

- Round 7, 250th (compensatory)

The 2023 NFL Draft is scheduled for April 27-29 at Kansas City’s Union Station.
