Rams fire offensive coordinator Cignetti; Boras will assume duties
Frank Cignetti was fired Monday as offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams and his duties will be assumed by assistant head coach/offense Rob Boras, the team announced.
“We thank Frank for his hard work and dedication over the past four years,” Rams coach Jeff Fisher said in a statement. “We wish him the best moving forward.”
The Rams are 4-8 and have lost their last five games, including a 27-3 home defeat Sunday against Arizona. They are last or second-last among the NFL’s 32 teams in most major offensive statistical categories, including scoring (15.8 points per game, 31st), total offense (296.3 yards per game, 31st), passing yards (2,136, last) and average passing yards per game (178, last).
Fisher’s squad also has scored 13 points or fewer in seven of its eight losses. After Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals, Fisher announced Case Keenum would replace Nick Foles as the starting quarterback.
The Rams are ninth in rushing at 118.3 yards per game thanks in large part to the performance of rookie running back Todd Gurley, the 10th overall pick in the NFL draft.
Cignetti has been on Fisher’s coaching staff since 2012 and was elevated to offensive coordinator in February after spending three seasons as quarterbacks coach.
Boras, a native of Glen Ellyn near Chicago, had been the Rams’ tight ends coach since 2012 before being promoted to assistant head coach/offense in February. Before coming to the Rams, Boras was with Jacksonville for two years as a tight ends coach, the same position he held with the Chicago Bears from 2004-09.
