The Summer Olympics, soon to be winding down, has drawn 10,000 athletes from across the world to Paris to compete for gold, including nearly 600 on the U.S. Olympic team.
Closing ceremonies for the 2024 Summer Games are set for Aug. 11, and this year was the third time the French capital has hosted the events.
Historically, the U.S. has done the best at track and field, swimming and shooting, with more gold medals in these categories than any other. These are the top 15 sports for the U.S. at the summer Olympics since the first modern Olympic games in 1896.
China has surpassed the United States on the medal table as of Friday morning, with 31 gold medals at this year’s Games compared the U.S. with 30. But the American team continues to lead in overall medal count, with Team U.S.A. athletes bringing home 103 total medals as of Friday morning.
Olympians came from almost every state in the U.S. this year. However, Colorado, Vermont and Hawaii have the most Olympians per capita.

Illinois is among the states that sent the most athletes to this year’s Games, with 27. They represent a wide variety of sports, including but not limited to soccer, wrestling, rowing and rhythmic gymnastics.
