Edward A. Hechenberger, 96, of Belleville, Ill., born May 7, 1918, in Belleville, Ill., died Friday, July 18, 2014, at Sycamore Village, Swansea, Ill.
Mr. Hechenberger was a carpenter for Bauer Brothers and Liese Lumber Company in Belleville, Ill., before his retirement. He was a Cub Scout, a Boy Scout, and a leader of both, a Khoury League coach, and a huge Notre Dame Football fan. A past member of St. Peter's Cathedral, and was a member of the Men's Club and a funeral Mass server at the church, and was a current member of St. Luke's Catholic Church. Edward was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1028, and was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Shannon E., nee Fenoughty, Hechenberger, whom he married on Jan. 10, 1942, and who died Dec. 11, 1999; and his parents, Roman J. and Elizabeth, nee Dahlmann, Hechenberger; six sisters, Marie Voelker, Ceal Smith, Paula Jacobs, Sister Romana Hechenberger SSND, Henrietta Hechenberger, and Olivia Hechenberger; and four brothers, Joseph Heckenberger, Herman Hechenberger, Charles and John Beckfeld, and Herman Hechenberger.

Surviving are three sons and two daughters, Richard (Barbara) Hechenberger of Belleville, Ill., Mary Ann Swope of Belleville, Ill., Stephen (Deborah) Hechenberger of Melbourne, Fla., Nancy (Steven) Rueter of Belleville, Ill., and Reverend Gerald Hechenberger of Belleville, Ill.; 13 grandchildren, Tim (Reggie) Hechenberger, Karen Zeglin, Lynne (Jim) Schweiger, Jason Swope (fiancee Angie Ames), Josiah (Brandi) Swope, Joseph Swope, Heather Swope, Vanessa (Brad) Gould, Amanda Hechenberger, Thad (Erika) Rueter, Niki (James) Hughes, Stephanie (Jake) Francis and Tara Jo Rueter; 11 great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Shennandoah and Benjamin Hechenberger, Dalton and Ella Fortier, Blu Jem and Sky Cloud Swope, Nathan Domescik, Nathan and Dillon Gould and Evan Hughes; a great-great-grandchild, Sapphire Adams; three sisters, Theodora Grummel, Rose Marie Lodes and Theresa Hartmann, all of Belleville, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at home, Louise, Kati, David, Kelli, Lisa, Pat, Brittany, Heather and Ellen, and the staff at Sycamore Village.

Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2014, at St. Luke's Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., with Father Gerald Hechenberger officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, Ill.
