Coroner: X-rays will help decide cause of death for man found in Kaskaskia

Searchers combing the Kaskaskia River for a man who went missing Saturday evening after he reportedly dove into the water located the body of a 26-year-old New Baden man Monday.

Clinton County Coroner Phillip Moss said the body of Joshua Toennies was located in the river about a half mile downriver of where he was last seen. Toennies was last seen after he dove into the river around 8:30 p.m. south of Illinois 160/177 at New Memphis Station.

Moss said Toennies’ body was found around 11:35 a.m. Monday. He was pronounced dead at 12:25 p.m., Moss said.

A cause of death was not immediately available. Moss said x-rays on the body were pending and until he reviews those results, he won’t know whether Toennies drowned or suffered an injury that lead to his death.
