Police have released the identities of a pair of people who were struck Tuesday afternoon by a school bus in O’Fallon.
Junu Rai, 36, was killed by injuries suffered from the crash. Dal Mager, 45, was taken to Saint Louis University Hospital, where he remained Wednesday morning. Details about his condition were not immediately available.
According to a statement from the O’Fallon Police Department, officers were notified at 3:44 p.m. of the crash that occurred in the 8400 block of U.S. 50 just east of the intersection with Scott-Troy Road.
The school bus, which had children on board, was headed west when it struck both a man and a woman who also were walking west.
The crash is under investigation by the Illinois State Police Accident Reconstruction Team. Police did not immediately comment on whether the pedestrians were walking in the roadway or on the shoulder and did not release additional information about whether the bus driver, who they said was cooperative with the investigation, would be cited.
The children on the school bus and the bus driver were not injured in the collision.
Later Tuesday evening, as officers were still investigating the crash site, a vehicle traveling on U.S. 50 struck one of the police vehicles blocking traffic at the scene of the earlier crash.
O’Fallon Police said that at 8:38 p.m., Michael Wilkes, 58, of St. Louis was westbound on the highway when the car he was driving struck the police vehicle that was parked in the road blocking access to the west side of the crash investigation.
No one was hurt in that crash, but police learned Wilkes had been drinking and arrested him for driving under the influence and resisting arrest.
