Illinois State Police are investigating the suicide Wednesday of a 65-year-old village resident.

State Police Lt. David Bivens identified the decedent as Ronald W. Martin of 710 S. Main St. He fatally shot himself about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Martin shot himself while village police personnel including Chief Frank Moore were in the home, Bivens said. They had responded to a request from a relative to check on Martin.

“We were asked to investigate because we are an outside agency,” said Bivens. “This is to avoid any controversy that anything is being covered up,” he said.

Bivens said he had no indication that the death was anything more than a suicide.

The suicide of a person connected by friendship to a former chief of the village department comes just two weeks after another Caseyville Police officer, Sgt. Scott Miller, committed suicide with a firearm.
