Belleville man killed in crash that closed U.S. 50 for hours Sunday

A 33-year-old Belleville man was killed early Sunday in a one-car accident near Lebanon.

Joseph Rewerts was alone in his vehicle when he lost control about 7:30 a.m. He was on U.S. Highway 50 near its intersection with Rieder Road, according to St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone.

“As we sit here today, I believe the cause of death is going to be blunt force trauma,” Stone said. “The case is still under investigation and we are awaiting the results of toxicology tests.”

Details about the wreck were not immediately available from the Illinois State Police.

The crash closed U.S. 50 in both directions for several hours, according to Lebanon Police Chief Dave Roth.
