Fire heavily damages unoccupied home near Cahokia

A fire heavily damaged the front end of a home at 2430 White Street near Cahokia Wednesday night.

Camp Jackson Fire Department responded to the structure fire at approximately 8:20 p.m. during rainy and windy conditions. Firefighters said no one was inside the house at the time of the incident.

Homeowner Kenny Barnett said he had recently moved out of the house and had relocated to Summerfield. Barnett arrived on the scene Wednesday to assess the damage to the house he said he had been looking to sell. Smoke could be seen pouring out of the top window at the front of the house and through the front door.

Firefighters worked on scene for more than an hour Wednesday night to treat hot spots and remove debris.

Camp Jackson Fire Chief Chris Davis said the cause of the fire is under investigation. According to Davis, the fire appeared to have started in a spare room at the front end of the home.

No one was injured as a result of the incident.

Cahokia Volunteer Fire Department and Ameren Illinois also responded to the fire Wednesday.
