“Upon emergency personnel arrival, a 4-year-old child was found unconscious and not breathing. CPR and resuscitation efforts were given immediately after police and EMS arrival and continued as the child was transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital,” stated Dupo Police Chief Doug Keys in a press release.
Those efforts were not successful.
“Given the suspicious circumstances observed by Dupo Police, both the Illinois State Police and the Southern Illinois Child Death Investigation Task Force were notified and are actively assisting the Dupo Police Department in the investigation of this tragic incident,” Keys wrote.
Authorities did not release the name of the child.
St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly said there was a person in custody, but charges had not yet been issued.
On Monday afternoon, a Dupo police officer sat outside the home on North 9th Street. Birthday decorations surrounded the mailbox at the home.
