Edwardsville had at least four “smash-and-grab” car burglaries in one day Monday.
Edwardsville Police Chief Jay Keeven said four reported burglaries occurred Monday at various locations in the city. The incidents were reported at the Esic and Meyer locations of the Edwardsville YMCA and at the new Planet Fitness, which is located about halfway between the two YMCAs off Governors Parkway.
The amount and nature of items taken was not immediately available. According to a post on the Edwardsville Police Department Facebook page, the suspects gained entry into the vehicles by breaking the windows in order to steal property that was visible from outside the car.
“As always, we want to remind people not the leave their valuables visible in their vehicles,” Keeven said. Valuables such as purses, wallets, laptop bags, briefcases, backpacks and cell phones should be kept out of sight or taken with you, police said.
