The discovery Monday afternoon of human skeletal remains in rural Bunker Hill prompted the activation of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis.
Madison County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Mike Dixon, who’s heading the investigation, said children who were playing on a rural property located the remains around 3:30 p.m. and notified parents, who called police. Investigators who responded to the scene determined the victim likely died of a homicide.
Dixon would not say more precisely where the remains were found for fear of contaminating any evidence at the scene, which he described as a large rural area. He said detectives and cadaver dogs would begin work at the scene Tuesday.
Dixon said the identity of the victim remains unknown. A forensic test is pending.
Major Case detectives and Macoupin County Sheriff’s deputies will be stationed at the Bunker Hill Police Department as they conduct their investigation.
