Planning officials approve construction of a new restaurant at Belleville Crossing
The city planning commission has approved a proposal to build a Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers restaurant in Belleville.
Cliff Cross, director of Economic Development, Planning & Zoning, said the project was “recommended for approval unanimously, and it will be going before the mayor and Council,” likely at the Monday, Dec. 20 City Council meeting.
Kim Huynh, a public relations specialist for Freddy’s, wrote in an email that the “lease and engineering and site plans have been finalized for our Belleville Crossing location and ... hope to have a formal development timeline to share in the next few months.”
Cross provided the site plan of the restaurant and photos of a Bridgeton, Missouri, location with the same standard design.
Cross also stated that there are minor issues that need to be addressed, including the possible addition of some awnings on the back of the building (to help block the view of Route 15), adjustments to the dumpster enclosure area and finalizing where the manholes would be connected to the storm sewer.
Plans for the restaurant include the construction of an approximate 3,238 square-foot building with drive-thru and outdoor dining area on a 40,361 square-foot lot. It would be located at the Belleville Crossing Shopping Center just east of Buffalo Wild Wings.
Earlier this year there was talk of the franchise coming to Belleville.
At that time, in response to an inquiry sent to the restaurant’s corporate office, Huynh replied, “We have secured a site in Belleville at Belleville Crossing that we hope to open within the next couple of years ….”
Wichita, Kansas-based Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers was co-founded in 2002 by brothers Bill and Randy Simon and friend and business partner Scott Redler, according to the website. The restaurant is named after the Simon brothers’ father, Freddy Simon, a World War II veteran, who passed away in 2020.
Operating area locations include restaurants in Shiloh, Collinsville and Edwardsville.
