Take a video tour of this metro-east mansion. It could be yours for under $1 million
If you’ve ever wanted to own a mansion but can’t quite seem to secure that million-dollar-loan you need, a property in Granite City might be what you’re looking for.
At $850,000, the 9,052 sq. ft. property at 3112 Parkview Dr. is hard to beat.
The property features enough rooms to host a family of any size, and maybe even an additional family. With six beds, eight total bathrooms, and an in-ground pool, there is plenty of space ... and then some.
The home was originally purchased by Thomas Brimberry in 1982 after almost two years of construction. When Brimberry went to prison for embezzlement less than a year after the purchase, the family was evicted and the home was purchased by the Streif family, heirs and owners of the Vandalia Bus Lines, which owns it today.
“They just loved the unique character of the home and really wanted that personality to shine out,” said Tami Dittamore, a broker with RE MAX Alliance.
Some of the character Dittamore refers to includes tiles handcrafted in Mexico to match the custom-made wallpaper, a pet and children play room, a floor dedicated to a spa and bar and four ornately carved fireplaces.
A long hallway and elegant chandeliers greets you to the surplus of rooms and personal touches once you enter through the three-car garage.
To the right you’ll find the kitchen, which features a double oven, uniquely carved oak overhead beams, and a large island. Next to the custom oak cabinets you’ll find an in-wall toaster made by Modern Maid, a now-defunct company known for making unique home items in the 1970s.
As you continue down the main floor you’ll pass a living room, dining room, three bathrooms and two bedrooms. Up the staircase by the kitchen, there are four more bedrooms and three complete bathrooms, including some with installed floor bidets.
You can access the basement at the end of the main floor hallway through a narrow spiral staircase that looks like something in a cozy firehouse.
The finished basement is an entertainment wonderland. In addition to having two extra rooms, the main space of the lower level opens up to a spa room complete with a Jacuzzi and stone floors.
Further into the basement, you’ll come upon meticulously crafted wooden beams and an old-school bar. Sconces imitating bronze human hands decorate the walls and a glass mosaic of a conquistador scene adds to the grandiloquence of the floor.
Plus, with the ornate ceilings, art deco wall sconces and serious Roaring Twenties vibes, the opulent space is reminiscent of a certain Stanley Kubrick film featuring Jack Nicholson.
From the basement, you can access the sizable back yard, where an in-ground pool complete with water slide stands in the stone courtyard. A sun room and shaded patio are accessible from here.
Each floor features heavy Tudor beams, hand-carved wood, or ornate chandeliers. Homage to the era in which the home was built is evident in the 1980s intercom system that lines each room of the house. Before cell phones, a family would need such system would’ve been needed to call everyone in to dinner.
The home recently had its price reduced by $25,000 and has been on the market for a little under six months.
