St. Clair County surpasses 100 coronavirus deaths, with 60% from long-term care centers

St. Clair County has surpassed 100 coronavirus deaths, and 60% were from long-term care centers, the health department said Wednesday.

To date, nine of the 17 long-term care centers experiencing coronavirus outbreaks had a combined total of 61 deaths. Countywide, there have been 101 deaths.

“I had hoped that we would not break the 100 barrier, but we did today,” said Samantha Bierman, emergency response coordinator for the St. Clair County Health Department.

St. Clair County Emergency Management Director Herb Simmons noted that the county has seen both elderly and young people die during the coronavirus pandemic. Just Wednesday, health officials announced the deaths of a man in his 20s along with a woman in her 90s who had underlying health conditions.

The health department provides daily updates on the coronavirus outbreaks and other developments in the county during 3:30 p.m. live streams by the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency on Facebook.
