Officials say Illinois has seen five weeks of dropping COVID-19 cases, deaths

Illinois officials say the state has seen several consecutive weeks of dropping COVID-19 cases and virus-related deaths.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said Tuesday this week marks five consecutive weeks of dropping statistics that show action taken by its residents is working to flatten the state’s curve.

“Illinois has seen declining cases and declining fatality totals week after week for the past five weeks,” Ezike said, commending residents of Illinois in their actions over the past months. “You’ve saved so many with your actions.”

Ezike said the state also is seeing its lowest number of hospitalizations and patients in intensive care units. She said currently 1,658 people are hospitalized due to COVID-19 and 424 people are in the ICU, compared to Illinois’ peak of more than 5,000 patients hospitalized and 1,290 patients in ICUs.

Statewide, the Illinois Department of Health department on Tuesday reported 601 new cases of the virus had been confirmed, and there were an additional 38 deaths.

Illinois has seen a total of 6,707 deaths during the pandemic, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported. A total of 137,825 people have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, while more than 1.3 million people have been tested for COVID-19.

Locally, a total of 36 new cases were reported in the metro-east. St. Clair County reported 36 cases, Madison County reported 13 new cases and Monroe County reported two new cases. No COVID-19 related deaths were reported in the metro-east Tuesday.

Officials in St. Clair County said Tuesday also marked the first day in St. Clair County where no one has been on a ventilator since the pandemic began.
