7 new coronavirus-related deaths reported at southwestern IL nursing homes in past week
At least 175 people connected to southwestern Illinois long-term care centers have died from illness related to the coronavirus since the pandemic began.
The St. Clair County Health Department and Illinois Department of Public Health each provided updates Friday on the number of people affected by coronavirus outbreaks at those facilities.
St. Clair County has provided daily updates, but the state’s data is only updated on Fridays, when a more complete picture of the coronavirus’ effect on long-term care centers in the region becomes available.
In a week’s time, the state and St. Clair County Health Department recorded seven more deaths. The total Friday, 175, was up from 168 on June 19.
Three new outbreaks were announced Friday: 15 coronavirus cases from Beverly Farm in Godfrey; and four cases from both Autumn Meadows in Cahokia and Collinsville Rehabilitation and Healthcare.
A total of 44 long-term care centers across southwestern Illinois have now reported outbreaks, which health officials define as at least two cases. Of those, 16 facilities have also reported deaths.

The state’s updates on outbreaks come once a week at dph.illinois.gov/covid19/long-term-care-facility-outbreaks-covid-19.
The website medicare.gov records the number of beds for Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing homes.
Data discrepancies
The St. Clair County Health Department’s data did not match the state’s for two long-term care centers on Friday.
The Department of Public Health said there have been eight deaths from the outbreak at New Athens Home for the Aged, while the health department said there have been seven.
The state also reported one more coronavirus case at Knollwood Retirement Center in Caseyville than the health department did for the second week in a row.
The reason for the discrepancies was not clear Friday. The St. Clair County Health Department did not immediately respond to a Belleville News-Democrat inquiry.
The BND has not included higher numbers announced by the state in calculating the total deaths for the region. Local health departments and individual facilities have previously said the state’s data was off.
Since last week, for example, the state corrected the total number of deaths for Lebanon Care Center from 13 to 10. The St. Clair County Health Department has been reporting 10 deaths for Lebanon Care Center each day since May 24.
