COVID cases reported at 4 new southwestern Illinois long-term care centers in past week
In a week’s time, the coronavirus spread to four more long-term care centers in southwestern Illinois.
The latest outbreaks were out of Liberty Village of Maryville, Villas of Holly Brook in Bethalto, Greenville Nursing and Rehab, and Adaptive Illinois in Belleville, according to state and local reports.
Each of the locations had between two and three cases of the coronavirus. Two is the minimum amount to be considered an outbreak, according to health officials.
The Illinois Department of Public Health provides an update on the locations affected by coronavirus outbreaks each Friday, when a more complete picture of the virus’ effect on long-term care centers in the region becomes available.
The St. Clair County Health Department releases information about outbreaks more regularly. It announced coronavirus cases at Adaptive Illinois for the first time July 5.
Long-term care residents are among the most vulnerable to severe illness or death from the coronavirus, which causes the COVID-19 respiratory disease.
Since July 3, there have been four more deaths from outbreaks in the region’s long-term care centers.
Three of the deaths were announced Tuesday in St. Clair County: one each from Lebanon Care Center, BRIA of Belleville and Swansea Rehab and Care Center. And the state’s update on Friday included an additional death from Collinsville Rehabilitation and Healthcare.
At least 180 people connected to southwestern Illinois long-term care centers have died from illness related to the coronavirus since the pandemic began.
A total of 49 long-term care centers across the region have now reported outbreaks, and of those, 17 facilities have also reported deaths.

Both state and local agencies say they include residents and employees of the facilities in their data on coronavirus outbreaks.
The St. Clair County Health Department provides updates on the outbreaks and other developments in the county on the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency’s Facebook page. The state’s updates on outbreaks come once a week at dph.illinois.gov/covid19/long-term-care-facility-outbreaks-covid-19.
The website medicare.gov records the number of beds for Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing homes.
Discrepancies
The Illinois Department of Public Health’s information did not match the St. Clair County Health Department’s for several long-term care centers on Friday.
The Department of Public Health said there were more deaths out of some locations.
The Belleville News-Democrat has not included higher numbers announced by the state in calculating the total deaths for the region.
The state relies on local health departments for the information it reports and says on its website that the county-level agencies will have “the most up-to-date data.”
Health departments and individual facilities in the metro-east have previously said the state’s data was off.
