O’Fallon YMCA closes summer camp temporarily after staff tests positive for coronavirus

The O’Fallon Illinois Y summer camp is closed for the next two weeks, after three employees tested positive for COVID-19.

Gateway Region YMCA confirmed the two employees tested positive last week. A third was confirmed through a release issued Monday.

Two of the employees are camp counselors, including the one whose illness was confirmed Monday.

The position of the other employee was not specified, though the release said that person “did not have close contact with members or campers.”

“We know that our families, first responders and emergency personnel rely on us to help their children learn, grow and thrive during the summer months,” the YMCA statement reads. “We are sorry we can’t be open for them during their time of need.”

According to the first release, campers and counselors are kept in separate groups as a safety precaution. The campers and staff who had contact with the first counselor were notified and sent home.

The YMCA intends to reopen its O’Fallon camp July 27.

Last week, the YMCA announced the closure of two summer camps in the Atlanta, Georgia area when 85 campers and staff tested positive for coronavirus. Eighty-two infected campers and staff members in Lampe, Missouri also led to the closure of a camp there.
