St. Clair County reports smaller increase in new COVID cases but adds 1 death Tuesday

St. Clair County is starting to report smaller increases in new coronavirus cases after several record high one-day increases this month.

But as those statistics improve, officials said Tuesday that another St. Clair County resident has died from illness related to the coronavirus. The novel virus causes the COVID-19 respiratory disease.

The St. Clair County Health Department announced the death of a woman in her 70s with unknown underlying health conditions on Tuesday. A total of 149 people from St. Clair County have died since the coronavirus pandemic began.

Herb Simmons, the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency director, has said that if the county’s recent spike in cases was due to Fourth of July gatherings, he expected the numbers to start declining this week.

And, so far, St. Clair County has recorded smaller numbers on Monday and Tuesday, with 42 and 43 new cases, respectively. Just days earlier, St. Clair County recorded its largest one-day increase: 105 new cases on Saturday.

“Hopefully we’re going to see that continue to go down,” Simmons said.

County leaders stressed that residents should continue following safety guidelines, including wearing a face-covering such as a mask in public and staying at least 6 feet away from others, to cut down on their risk of infection.

A spike in cases across the metro-east is bringing the region closer to new thresholds the state is using to decide whether to reimpose restrictions on places like bars and restaurants.

Illinois officials are watching the rate of new diagnoses and the amount of hospital resources available.

“The metro-east region has one of the highest rates of cases and transmissions in the state even as the rest of the state remains steady,” Gov. J.B. Pritzker said at a news conference Tuesday in Collinsville.

Simmons lauded the organizers of fall events that draw crowds to the metro-east for canceling this year due to the coronavirus, including the Belleville Chili Cook-off, Belleville Oktoberfest and Collinsville’s Italian Fest.

Here are the latest available statistics for southwestern Illinois counties. The amount of coronavirus cases in local ZIP codes is reported by the Illinois Department of Public Health at dph.illinois.gov/covid19/statistics. All other statistics come from local health departments. The “recoveries” figure the agencies provide is the number of COVID-19 positive people who completed a 14-day quarantine. Fourteen days is how long experts believe it takes for illness to develop after exposure to the virus:
