Madison County reported 55 new coronavirus cases Thursday, but no new deaths, while St. Clair County reported 49 new cases and one new death.

The St. Clair County death was a woman in her 70s with no known health conditions.

Overall, the metro-east region had 129 new cases Thursday and the one new death. The state’s public health agency defines the metro-east as St. Clair, Madison, Monroe, Randolph, Clinton, Bond and Washington counties. If the metro-east sees a collective 8% positivity rate for three consecutive days, the state will impose restrictions for the entire region.

The metro-east reported a 7.6% positivity rate as of July 26, according to the most recent data available on the state’s regional metrics website.

During St. Clair County’s daily update on the county’s COVID-19 cases Thursday, St. Clair County Board Chairman Mark Kern expressed optimism and caution about the region’s status

“Our positivity rate is less than it was in June by a small margin. It’s headed in the right direction, but we need to get the point across it needs to be going down more,” Kern said. “We need to be way below that 8%.”

St. Clair County’s latest rundown

St. Clair County now has 3,708 coronavirus cases and 152 deaths related to the virus, leading the metro-east in both categories. Officials announced the daily positivity rate is 10.2%, up from 9.7% on Wednesday. The positivity rate is the number of coronavirus tests that are positive.

Two zip codes in the county had double-digit increases Thursday, those being 62269 (O’Fallon — +12 for a total of 250) and 62226 (Belleville, Swansea — +10 for a total of 386).

However, the daily cases total was the county’s lowest this week after days of 57 on Monday, 63 on Tuesday and 66 on Wednesday. Also, the county did not report any new cases from long-term care facilities.

Cases reported Wednesday in St. Clair County ranged in age from under 10 to people in their 70s, including 6 cases of young people in their teens, 7 cases of people in their 20s, 10 cases of people in their 30s and 11 cases of people in their 40s. Currently, 41 people remain hospitalized due to COVID-19, but there are no patients on ventilators in St. Clair County.

“We are going to get through this,” Herb Simmons, director of the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency, said during Thursday’s briefing. “We’ve just got to keep our head above water. Everybody keep your fingers crossed the numbers will be going in the right direction.”

O’Fallon mayor weighs in

O’Fallon Mayor Herb Roach urged residents of his St. Clair County city to wear masks and take all the necessary COVID-19 safety protocols in his weekly column to the O’Fallon community. As noted above, the O’Fallon zip code saw 12 new cases Thursday.

“I know that some people object to wearing masks, but we need to ask you to take all precautions to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and help keep our citizens safe, and our businesses open,” he said. “Please wear a mask or face covering when in public and practice social distancing. Wash your hands.

“And if you feel sick, please stay at home. This is our fight and only with all of us working together are we going to win it. Having the state shut down our businesses again is not a good option and could be devastating to many. “

Madison County by the numbers

Madison County, meanwhile, now has 2,007 coronavirus cases and 72 virus-related deaths.

The county saw the biggest jump in the 62025 zip code (Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, Pontoon Beach, Roxana), which reported 15 new cases for a second-straight day, bringing the total to 293 for that zip code. In addition, 62249 (Highland) was the other zip code in Madison County to report a double digit increase Thursday with 11 new cases for a total of 61.
