Southwest IL reports 159 new cases, one death reported in St. Clair County
Editor’s Note: (6:52 p.m.) An earlier version of this story stated the metro-east reported a record-breaking day of new COVID-19 new cases. That was incorrect. A total of 159 new cases of COVID-19 were reported Monday.
The metro-east region reported a total of 159 new positive tests and one new death Monday.
Two counties accounted for the majority of the new cases. St. Clair County reported 108 new cases, while Madison County reported 44.
St. Clair County officials said the reported death was a man in his 90s with underlying health conditions.
The state’s public health agency defines the metro-east as St. Clair, Madison, Monroe, Randolph, Clinton, Bond and Washington counties. New cases were reported in Randolph, Bond, Washington, Jersey and Monroe County as well. Randolph accounted for the biggest increase, with 10 new cases reported Monday.
The metro-east reported a 7.3% positivity rate for the seven-day period from July 25 to July 31, according to the most recent data available on the state’s regional metrics website. If the metro-east reaches an 8% positivity rate and stays there for three days, restrictions could be imposed by the state to help slow the spread of the virus.
The metro-east’s rate stood at a 7.7% for most of the weekend.
Currently, the metro-east has a total of 60 patients in the ICU with COVID-19, 160 are currently on ventilators. According to IDPH, 48% of the metro-east’s ICU beds are currently in use and 10% of ventilators are being used.

Two ZIP codes in the county that had the largest increases Monday were 62269 (O’Fallon — +8 for a total of 283) and 62220 (Belleville, Smithton — +6 for a total of 330).
Cases reported Monday in St. Clair County ranged in age from 10 to people in their 70s. Fifty people remain hospitalized due to COVID-19; two patients are on ventilators in St. Clair County.
