The metro-east region’s positivity rate remained above the state-set threshold Monday, as counties reported 233 new coronavirus cases as of 6:30 p.m.

Region 4’s seven-day rolling average positivity rate dropped slightly to 9.4% Monday, down from 9.6% on Sunday. It is the highest in the state and above the state-set threshold of 8%. The positivity rate is the percentage of positive tests for COVID-19.

This rate is one of the metrics used by Gov. J.B. Pritzker and state Department of Public Health officials when they announced new restrictions that went into effect on Aug. 18 because the region’s rate had remained above 8%.

State health officials on Monday reversed a decision to ban indoor dining in the metro-east this week after pressure from public officials, according to St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency Director Herb Simmons. State officials now say they will consider the ban in September, if COVID-19 trends do not improve.

On Monday, as of 6:30 p.m., 233 new cases and one new death were reported in metro-east counties, also known as Region 4. The region includes St. Clair, Madison, Randolph, Clinton, Monroe, Washington and Bond counties.

New cases were reported in St. Clair, Madison, Monroe and Bond counties for Monday. St. Clair County reported 79 new cases and Madison County reported 54. Monroe County reported 6, Randolph reported 16, Washington reported 7 and Bond reported 18. Clinton County reported 53 new cases, from Saturday, Aug. 22 through Monday.

An additional death was also reported in Madison County; a woman in her 80s.

St. Clair County’s latest rundown

St. Clair County now has 5,449 coronavirus cases and 173 deaths related to the virus, leading the metro-east in both categories.

The county announced a daily positivity rate of 9.2% on Monday, down from 9.5% on Sunday. The daily positivity rate is the percentage of positive coronavirus tests that are taken that day.

The county announced Monday that 43 people are hospitalized due to COVID-19, and currently, no patients are on ventilators

New cases ranged in age from young people under one to people in their 80s. Of the 79 new cases, 45 people were in their 30s or younger.

At congregate living homes in the county, three new cases of COVID-19 were reported: one new case at Cedar Ridge of Lebanon and two new cases at Freeburg Terrace.

St. Clair County saw one double-digit increase in COVID-19 cases in the 62226 (Belleville, Swansea) zip code Monday, where 10 new cases were reported for a total of 557.

Southwestern Illinois COVID-19 statistics

The following are the latest available statistics by county. ZIP-code-level numbers are provided by the state each afternoon at dph.illinois.gov/covid19/covid19-statistics. Madison County compiles its own statistics by ZIP code from the state reporting system later in the day, so the numbers may differ from what appears on the Illinois Department of Public Health’s website.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports the information Madison County provides. ZIP codes with fewer than five cases of the virus are not reported by health officials. The number in parentheses after each ZIP code below reflects the change from the previous day’s cumulative total. A decrease reflects a correction. All other information comes from local health departments. The “recoveries” figure refers to the number of people who completed the required isolation period in most counties:
