Positivity rate in southwest IL falls, but officials fear another spike after Labor Day

Click to read COVID-19 updates for your county:

With new restrictions in place to slow the spread of COVID-19, officials are worried the upcoming Labor Day weekend will mean more coronavirus cases for the metro-east.

St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency Director Herb Simmons said Tuesday that if the same types of gatherings happen that occurred during the Fourth of July and Memorial Day weekends, the regional will most likely see another spike in cases.

“My concern is the Labor Day holiday coming up,” Simmons said. “If you look back at the Fourth of July and Memorial Day, if we follow suit, those numbers are probably going to go up.”

New restrictions were announced for the metro-east that were scheduled to go into effect at 11 p.m. Tuesday, adding restrictions to bars, restaurants, social gatherings and more in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the region.

Region 4, which includes St. Clair County, was given until Wednesday, Sept. 2, to get its seven-day rolling positivity rate down after new restrictions were implemented last week by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The region’s positivity rate fell to 9.6% Tuesday, down from 10.4% Monday. The Illinois Department of Public Health has provided the rate since June 26 at dph.illinois.gov/regionmetrics and defines the region as St. Clair, Madison, Randolph, Clinton, Monroe, Bond and Washington counties.

Information on the website is delayed by three days, so Saturday, Aug. 29, is the latest date information was available for Tuesday.

The statewide positivity for Aug. 24-30 is 4.3%.

St. Clair County reported 85 new positive test results on Tuesday, up from the 56 cases reported Monday. The county reported gathering 838 test samples on Tuesday, down from the 982 tests reported Monday.

County officials reported one new death, a woman in her 80s with unknown health conditions.

In Madison County, 57 new cases of COVID-19 were reported along with two new deaths; a man in his 70s and a woman in her 90s. The county reported 625 new tests on Tuesday.

As of Tuesday, 29% of the region’s hospital beds and 38% of the ICU beds are available, according to state health officials.

Elsewhere in the metro-east, Monroe County reported eight new cases of COVID-19 and Randolph County reported 10 new cases. Clinton County reported 39 new cases stemming from Aug. 29-31 and 25 new positives on Sept. 1. As of 6:30 p.m., Bond and Washington counties had not reported data on daily COVID-19 cases for the day.

Outside of Region 4, Perry County reported two new deaths, a woman in her 80s and a woman in her 90s.

St. Clair County’s latest rundown

St. Clair County has now recorded a total of 5,935 COVID-19 diagnoses and 175 deaths since the coronavirus pandemic began.

The county announced a daily positivity rate of 10.1% on Tuesday, up from 5.7% on Monday. The daily positivity rate is the percentage of positives from a day’s worth of coronavirus tests.

The newly diagnosed St. Clair County residents ranged in age from children under 10 to people in their 90s. No additional information was immediately available on those patients.

Southwestern Illinois COVID-19 statistics

ZIP-code-level numbers below are provided by the state each afternoon at dph.illinois.gov/covid19/covid19-statistics. Madison and Macoupin counties compile their own statistics by ZIP code later in the day, so the numbers may differ from what appears on the Illinois Department of Public Health’s website. The Belleville News-Democrat reports the information county health departments provide.

ZIP codes with fewer than five cases of the virus are not reported by health officials. The number in parentheses after each ZIP code below reflects the change from the previous day’s cumulative total. A decrease reflects a correction.

All other information comes from local health departments. The “recoveries” figure refers to the number of people who completed the required isolation period in most counties:
