St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly, who is running for Congress in the 12th District, has received his first endorsement from an elected federal official.

U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline, this week put her support behind Kelly, who is running for the Democratic nomination, with the hopes of taking on U.S. Rep. Mike Bost, R-Murphysboro in the November 2018 election.

The primary election is in March.

“Brendan Kelly is the type of fighter that Southern Illinois needs in Congress, and that’s why I’m proud to endorse him,” Bustos said in a news release. “As a young man, Brendan signed up to serve our country in uniform — and today, he’s continuing that service as state’s attorney fighting for his community. Brendan knows that hardworking families in Southern Illinois deserve better jobs, better wages and a better future, and he’s exactly the champion they deserve in Congress.”

Bustos on Wednesday also is scheduled to be at a fundraiser for Kelly in Springfield.

There had been speculation Bustos was going to run for governor, but she ultimately chose to stay out of that race. The congresswoman represents Illinois’ 17th District, which includes the Quad Cities area, and is a co-chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee in Congress.

Dean Pruitt, of Millstadt; David Bequette, of Columbia; Adam King, of Alton; Pat McMahan, of Mascoutah; and Chris Miller of Roxana are also vying for the Democratic nomination in the 12th District.
