Man wearing surgical mask robs Madison County car wash

A business across from Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City was robbed Wednesday afternoon by a man wearing a surgical mask.

A man holding a handgun demanded money from the two employees at The Rain Tunnel Express Car Wash at 1511 Niedringhaus Ave. at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. There were no injuries reported.

Granite City police are getting assistance in tracking the suspect, who ran off, with an Illinois State Police dog, said Lt. Jenna Deyong.

The robbery is being investigated, and police do not know how much money was taken.

A bank in Wood River was robbed earlier this month by a man wearing a surgical mask; Granite City police could not say if there were links between the crimes.
