Coroner IDs Edwardsville man who died in fire that also killed three dogs

A 62-year-old man died in a house fire in Edwardsville Monday morning, the Madison County Coroner’s Office announced.

Steven E. King of 110 Second Ave. died from smoke inhalation, according to preliminary autopsy results pending toxicology tests, Coroner Steve Nonn said in a news release. Funeral arrangements are pending.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

Edwardsville Fire Department Deputy Chief James Whiteford said a neighbor or a passer-by saw flames in the home’s basement and called for help shortly after 6 a.m. Monday.

King’s body was found in the basement, Whiteford said.

Whiteford said two other persons resided in the home but they were out of town at the time of the fire. Three dogs that were in kennels also perished in the blaze.
