Victim in fatal Illinois 111 car accident identified as 6-year-old Wood River girl

A 6-year-old Wood River girl has been identified as the person killed Sunday in a car accident on Illinois 111 in South Roxana.

Layla A. Williford-Mason was riding in the rear passenger side seat of her father’s 2004 Nissan Altima when their vehicle was struck by a pickup truck about 6 p.m. near the intersection of the state route and Broadway Avenue, a news release from Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn stated.

According to Nonn, Frank J. Williford, 28, was driving the Altima northbound on Illinois 111 when a southbound 2002 Chevrolet truck driven by Pavel Chernyavskiy, 29, collided with them as it was turning left onto eastbound Broadway Avenue.

Layla was in a booster seat with her seatbelt on during the crash, Nonn said. She was pronounced dead on scene at 8 p.m. and her cause of death was internal injuries.

Both Layla’s dad and Chernyavskiy, the driver of the pickup, were transported to St. Louis area hospitals for treatment, Nonn said. Layla’s juvenile sibling was also transported to the hospital. Chernyavskiy’s passenger, 21-year-old Alex E. Turner, was transferred to a local hospital.

The crash is still under investigation by South Roxana police with the assistance of the Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit. Funeral arrangements for Layla are pending.
