One killed, two hospitalized in three-car crash on I-255 in Madison County
The driver of a car involved in a multiple vehicle head-on accident on Interstate 255 in Madison County has died, Illinois State Police announced Monday evening.
The person who was killed has not been identified, pending notification of next of kin, state police said. The crash happened around 10:55 a.m. near mile marker 266.
According to a preliminary investigation, a blue 2010 Honda car was traveling northbound on I-255 when the driver was going too fast for the heavy rain, lost control and left the roadway to the left, striking a white 2018 Honda Civic head-on. Police say the Civic came to a rest on the side of the roadway while the blue car continued into the lanes of southbound traffic.
It was then that a 2019 International tractor-trailer could not avoid striking the blue car head-on, police said. The driver of the blue car was killed.
The drivers of both other cars were transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said. All lanes of I-255 southbound were closed for approximately 30 minutes.
The crash is still under investigation and police said they would not release any further information as of Monday evening.
