St. Clair County reports three COVID-19 deaths, region’s positivity rate remains 7.3%
Three new deaths were reported in St. Clair County Tuesday, according to county officials, as the metro-east region marked its third consecutive day below a positivity rate threshold set by the state.
Two women in their 70s and one woman in her 90s died from COVID-19, St. Clair County officials said. No additional information was available on the three women.
The county’s positivity rate Tuesday was 5.7%, down from Monday’s rate of 6.7%. Tuesday marked the 24th day the county’s positivity rate was below 8%, according to county officials, and the sixth consecutive day it was under 6.5%. The daily positivity rate is the percentage of positives from a day’s worth of coronavirus tests.
“We’re doing pretty well here,” said St. Clair County Chairman Mark Kern. “We just need to continue to drive those numbers down.”
Regional positivity rate is under 8% for third consecutive day
As for Region 4, the state reported the rolling seven-day average positivity rate remained the same Tuesday, halting at 7.3%. Tuesday marked the third day in a row that the region’s rate has been below 8% and is the lowest the positivity rate has been since Aug. 7.
Illinois provides the rate for each region at dph.illinois.gov/regionmetrics. Information on the website is delayed by three days, so Saturday, Sept. 19, was the latest data available Tuesday.
The state defines the metro-east, or Region 4, as St. Clair, Madison, Clinton, Randolph, Monroe, Bond and Washington counties. If the region reaches the state’s 6.5% positivity rate threshold, some restrictions may be lifted, according to the state’s rules Rebuild Illinois plan.
Meanwhile, the state’s seven-day positivity rate from Sept. 15-21 was 3.5%.
Overall on Tuesday, 85 new cases of COVID-19 and three new deaths had been reported in the region as of 5:30 p.m. St. Clair County reported 30 new cases and Madison County reported 42.
Elsewhere in Region 4 on Tuesday, Washington County reported three new cases, Randolph County reported 2 and Monroe County reported eight. As of 5:30 p.m., Bond and Clinton counties had not reported daily COVID-19 data.
Regionally, 33% of the metro east’s hospital beds and 47% of the ICU beds were available as of Tuesday afternoon, according to data from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Southwestern Illinois COVID-19 statistics
ZIP code-level numbers below are provided by the state each afternoon at dph.illinois.gov/covid19/covid19-statistics. Madison and Macoupin counties compile their own statistics by ZIP code later in the day, so the numbers may differ from what appears on the Illinois Department of Public Health’s website. The Belleville News-Democrat reports the information county health departments provide.
ZIP codes with fewer than five cases of the virus are not reported by health officials. The number in parentheses after each ZIP code below reflects the change from the previous day’s cumulative total. A decrease reflects a correction.
All other information comes from local health departments. The “recoveries” figure refers to the number of people who completed the required isolation period in most counties.
