Remodeled Aldi reopens in Swansea with more parking, natural light and refrigeration

The newly expanded and renovated Aldi grocery store in Swansea has reopened.

The project was part of a $1.9 billion investment in more than 1,300 Aldi stores nationwide, the News-Democrat reported as work began in March.

Swansea’s store at 1708 N. Illinois St., was expanded north toward Illinois 161 with additional parking added where the former Bank of America building used to stand.

The chain purchased the bank for $385,575 and tore it down to make way for the improvements. The ATM machine remains.

When work on the expansion began in June, Dallas Alley, Swansea Building and Zoning director, said the stores plan to take down the old bank building was welcomed by the village.

“In addition, (Aldi was) going to add 51 new parking spaces,” he said. “One of the big issues we’ve had here is always ingress/egress in parking.”

Rob Jeffries, O’Fallon division vice president for Aldi, said during the early stages of construction that the expansion of the Swansea store would “offer shoppers an improved layout with more refrigeration to accommodate the recently expanded fresh, healthy and convenient food.”

Other new features include open ceilings and natural lighting and the use of environmentally friendly materials.

Aldi first announced plans to remodel and expand its stores in February 2017. A store in O’Fallon was remodeled in November 2017, and a new Aldi store opened in Fairview Heights in January 2019.

Aldi in Swansea is now open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
