The highest earner in 2020, the latest figures available, was former District Superintendent Jeff Dosier. He was paid $200,358, according to records provided to the BND from the school district through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Dosier retired from the school district in 2020 after 13 years with the district, nine of which he served as the superintendent. In June, he was hired by East St. Louis district 189 as the district’s chief business official.

Current District Superintendent Brian Mentzer was the second-highest earner employed by District 201, bringing in $166,987, the records show.

Mentzer was chosen by the district’s school board to replace Dosier after his retirement. He took over the position during the 2020-21 school year.

Belleville West Principal Richard Mertens was third, with a salary of $158,251.

The fourth-highest earner at the school district in 2020 was Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Melissa Taylor, who earned $152,151. The fifth-highest earner was Director of Alternative Programs Andrew Gannon , who was paid $144,500.

The BND’s Public Pay Database goes back to 2011 with information obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests and public filings. The salary information does not always include insurance or benefits. Some records include detailed information on overtime and other pay, while for some districts that information was not readily available.

The database includes worker compensation in most local governments, including cities, counties, townships, school districts and local colleges and universities. More pay records will be added as the BND receives salary data through open records requests.
